Cayo Costa 3 Day Exploration - Beautiful Tropical Adventure!

Join the Tampa Adventure Group for this chance to camp out in tents and explore on one of Americas Top Beaches and Florida's most beautiful secret jewel - Island Cayo Costa.

TAG Difficulty Rating: 4 of 10 Easy/Moderate (tent sites, no electricity, 1 hour long boat rides, lots of sun!)

Background Information:
With nine miles of beautiful beaches and acres of pine forests, oak-palm hammocks, and mangrove swamps, this barrier island park is a Gulf Coast paradise. The park is accessible only by private boat or ferry. Visitors may see manatees and pods of dolphins in the waters around the park, as well as a spectacular assortment of over 100 types of birds. On the island, visitors can swim or snorkel in the surf, enjoy the sun, and picnic in the shade. Shelling is especially good during the winter months. Nature trails provide opportunities for hiking and off-road bicycling. Saltwater anglers can fish from their boats or throw a line out into the surf.

Is anyone else planning to carpool from the Hard Rock Casino? Since the start time has been moved back to 1pm, should we meet there at at 9AM (instead of 6AM)?

Also, I'm bringing a 4 man tent. I know it has room to spare for two strangers, but it may be a bit cozy with more than that.

Richard, Great question... No you do not have to pre-arrange the Saturday option to visit the famous Cabbage Key, when we are offloading onto Cayo Costa we will make arrangements for the ferry to pick us up for those who wish to visit cabbage key. The last time we were there we did a head count of who wanted to go to Cabbage Key and then we pre-paid 5 or 10 bucks and they put us on a list for Saturday. Wont be a problem at all. I will be at Weedon Island, look forward to meeting you there.

Dave, do we need to arrange the Saturday optional ferry to Cabbage Key in advance, either individually or as a group, due to the busy weekend? I am also interested in carpooling from the HR, and if anyone is also doing Weedon Island Kayak next weekend, perhaps we can see each other there.

UPDATE: This event start time has changed to 1:00PM. Please be at the docks at 1:00PM so we can load the ferry. This will give you more time to wake up, pack, and drive to the ferry dock. :-)

Don't forget your fishing pole and license. That was one of my favorite parts of the weekend last year. Luke- where are you located?

Luke, We usually all meet at like the Hard Rock Casino early around 6AM and then those who want to carpool can join with others. They allow us to park in the south garage for free, and they have security. As for food we bring all kind of things, there is a small shop on the island that sells ice so you can bring perishables if you need to in coolers. There are grills as well. Bring regular camp food :-)

Great weekend full of laughter, good conversation, delicious food, beautiful park and interesting and diverse members/conversation. Even with the storm on Sunday, I had a blast...so we got a little wet!!! It just added to the fun! Thank you to Stan for organizing and leading this event. A special thanks to everyone that contributed in a positive way to make the weekend so memorable and fun.
