This will be your first glimpse att he beautiful landscape and trail as we head out. From here on it will take us about 7 hours of hiking (13 km) to reach the first campsite in Huayllabamba.
More Inca Trail....
December 11th: Physically the toughest day of the trip, but by then we have had 2 days to get used to the change in altitude. We will trek about 16 km and climbing 2 high passes. One of the passes will be Warmi Wanusca, at 13,800 ft, is the highest point of the trek. Though it will be a tough day the view is absolutely breathtaking and stunning, I promise it will be like nothing you have seen before! Before we setup camp for the night we will visit to the ancient ruins of Runkurakay and Sayacmarca. We will be camping in Pacaymayu.
December 12th: Wake up and enjoy a much easier trek on a flat or downhill trail for a total distance of about 11km. Along the way we will visiting the famous archaeological sites of Phuyupatamarca, Intipata and Wiñaywayna. As afternoon approaches we will be camping out next to the Wiñaywayna archaeological site just as the first discoverers did.
December 13th: Wake up and have breakfast then, we depart to Inti Punku, which is the old Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. This will take us about an hour and a half, but it will give us a rare and unforgettable experience observing the ruins from that point. We will hike down and once in Machu Picchu we have a private guided tour of about 2 hours and in the afternoon we travel back to Cusco by train, yep train not bus or car. After a very rewarding day we will arrive back at the hotel in Cusco around 9:00PM

I have several friends from Lima, Peru, and they have lived` there and they all have been to Machu Picchu. They rave about how wonderful the site is. Only one in the world like it. I have traveled through out Colombia, I hope that Peru is next on my list of places to explore... Have fun, best of luck,,, Rafael
Sounds great Michael! If anyone needs a sleeping bag- I am selling one I bought on discount at REI, it is too short for me. It is a Lafuma- 20 degree weather rating, light green. Perfect for a short girl, not so much for the tall ones :)
I'm planning a post-Peru house party at my home in Brandon after we get back. I'm thinking Sat the 19th at 6:30 so we have enough time to go through the pics. It'll be an open invite party (bring whomever you'd like including family and normal friends) so we can show of pictures and video. I'll be donating a keg and will have a pool table, air hockey, backyard fire pit and maybe hot tub going depending on the weather. I'll have details printed up by the time we leave next Monday.
Anyone who is tired of doing the stairwell or parking garage at work, tenoroc mines WMA in north Lakeland has some pretty hilly terrain (for Florida) it's practically mountainous. You can get a good 20 mile hike in if you like. Also has some nice views of small lakes and such. Only open friday to monday, $3.00 per person. The mountains are actually old heaped up spoil piles , now really pretty fern covered forested hills. Again, by Florida standards, but about as hilly as you can get here.
I don't think there is any way to predict how you might be affected by the altitude. I didn't notice any effect at all, and I even drank much less water than I normally do. Other people I know became violently ill for days. It's a coin toss.
You can get coca candy from street vendors or even at the shops in the Lima airport, and that might be helpful on the hike. I did get winded climbing, but I'm pathetically out of shape, so all you stair climbers should have no issues whatsoever! :)
There are other treks to the site that are a bit more rugged, but cheaper and pretty cool from what I've read. Maybe good for a 'Peru: Part Deux" trip someday! I think for a trip like this, cardio is the way to go. If you haven't been hiking much, even in flat Florida, this could be quite strenuous. As Scar would say, "Be prepared."
At first I started without my pack, however once I was comfortable with these pieces of equipment I began to load my pack with clothes, containers of rice, and even dumbbell weights little by little until I had achieved my target weight of what I knew I?d carry on the trail. I would also walk aroung my neighborhood with my pack on on days I couldn?t make it to the gym. This turned out to help me greatly as my only enemy once on trail was altitude and that went away with keeping my body hydrated.
On the topic of training. The more walking you do the better off you will be. I trained before for a 20 day hike in the Beartooth Mountain in Montanta and am glad to share my training steps for this. In terms of cardio training I went to the gym 3 days a week and used the eliptical for 30 minutes to get my body loose. I then used the treadmill for 30 minutes using the Hill program to get used to going ?up? and ?down? hills. Finally I used the stairmaster for 15-30 minutes.
Glad the topic of hydration came up. Starting on the plane ride to Peru we will all experience a loss in our bodies hydration levels. To counteract this we should start drinking water on the plane. This will also help us to acclimate quicker once we start gaining elevation. The more water the better. Rose made a good point, if your pee is clear your body if fully hydrated, if you start going yellow..DRINK MORE WATER :)
